What to expect from your consultation with a physiotherapist

Your physiotherapist is a health professional who will help you establish and maintain a healthy active lifestyle.

Your physiotherapist will work with you to achieve this, and wants to know what is causing you difficulties and concerns. It is a good idea to write down any points or questions beforehand so you don’t forget.

Initial visit
Your first appointment may last half an hour to an hour, because the physiotherapist will take a thorough medical history, assess your needs and discuss your goals for treatment. This information will help the physiotherapist to design an individualised treatment programme. Your physiotherapist will then explain your treatment, expected results, how long it will take and how much it will cost, and seek your agreement before proceeding.

Subsequent visits may take from 15 minutes to half an hour.

What treatment should you expect?
Physiotherapists use a variety of treatments. These may include:

If you have any changes to your medical or general condition during your course of treatment, such as pregnancy, illness or prescribed drugs, make sure you tell your physiotherapist.

What happens if you are not happy with your treatment?

If you have concerns about the treatment you received from your physiotherapist or have concerns about your physiotherapist/patient relationship you can:
