Elizabeth Binns

I have been Chair of the Older Adult Special Interest Group since 2010 and an active member of the Neurology Special Interest Group since 1994.

My first job was as a physiotherapist on the Assessment, Treatment & Rehabilitation of the Older Adult wards at Waitakere Hospital. It was there that I was bitten by the rehabilitation bug seeing the lifelong changes that physiotherapy creates with the people we work with and their family/whanau. It was also in West Auckland that I became aware of the diversity of New Zealand and the opportunities and challenges that this creates for health professionals.

I currently work at AUT University as a senior researcher and lecturer focusing on older adults, falls and neurological physiotherapy. I have presented both nationally and internationally.

Policy directions:

  • Support physiotherapists to engage with technology to develop and diversify their practice
  • Improve our awareness of opportunities to work within differing funding models
  • Encourage PNZ to lobby central government on issues in which we are world experts such as exercise prescription in chronic health populations, management of musculoskeletal disorders
  • Engage with all members to be active within the profession

Eilzabeth was elected through vote onto National Executive at the AGM 23 May 2014.
