Ian d'Young - President

A member of the Auckland Branch. I work with the Concord Performance Improvement team at the Auckland DHB helping to improve the delivery of services to our patients across all areas of the organisation.

I graduated from the Otago School of Physiotherapy in 1998 and since that time have worked as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist in both private and public practice in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

I am the former national clinical lead for haemophilia physiotherapy and held the first DHB-based physiotherapy practitioner role in New Zealand. Prior to taking on the role as President of Physiotherapy New Zealand, I served on the National Executive three years. I have received awards for my work in developing regional and national physiotherapy-led health services including the 2012 Healthcare Excellence Award and the 2013 Chief Executive’s Award at ADHB. While in the UK I completed a Masters of Science degree in biomechanics and am the author of books, multimedia and peer-reviewed articles relating to physiotherapy and the management of bleeding disorders.

I am interested to growing the skills of our profession in New Zealand to meet the challenges of a health landscape where long term and chronic condition management are as important as our more traditional areas of clinical practice. I believe that the establishment of a better career development pathway will be of long term benefit and will help to retain talented people within the physiotherapy profession. I am committed to being a strong voice, advocating for the value of physiotherapy and rehabilitation with central government, national funders and the public.

I may be contacted through the Physiotherapy New Zealand National Office pnz@physiotherapy.org.nz or via president@physiotherapy.org.nz

At the AGM on 23 May 2014, Ian was elected unopposed as President. He is a member of the Auckland Branch.
